Ocean forecasting

Mediterranean Sea and Adriatic Sea ocean forecasts are produced by the Gruppo Nazionale di Oceanografia Operativa (GNOO) - National Group of Operational Oceanography of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia.
GNOO forecasts the marine currents, temperature and others physical variables for the all Mediterranean Sea and, with a higher resolution, for the Adriatic Sea.
The forecasting system has been developed in the past years within projects financed by the Italian Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea, the Ministry of Foreigner Affairs and the European Commission. It is maintained operational by the group of operational oceanography at INGV.
Every day GNOO produces forecasts for the next ten days. Temperature, salinity, intensity and direction of currents and non tidal sea level are released from sea surface to the bottom.
Wind stress, sea level anomaly and heat flux are computed at air/sea interface.

Forecasts are produced using atmospheric forcing provided to INGV by the Aeronautica Militare (Italian Meteorological Office). Forecasts are available at dedicated websites that are updated every day:
